‘A2-B-C’ Awarded in Ukraine
The second leg of the ‘A2-B-C’ world tour ended this week in the Ukraine with the film receiving the award for Best Documentary at the STEPS Rights Film Festival. More information on the award can be found HERE. The third leg of the ‘A2-B-C’ world tour begins next week with screenings in Berlin and Taiwan. This will be followed by a short promotional tour in Japan with screenings in Sendai, Kyoto, Kobe and Hiroshima (details HERE) in December.

‘In Containment’ to screen in Paris
Ian’s documentary ‘In Containment’ (2012, Japan) about the situation in Fukushima fifteen months after the nuclear meltdown will screen on March 22, 2013, in Paris. Details can be found here.
‘In the Grey Zone’ and ‘A2’ featured in “Disaster Films” article
Ian’s two documentaries about the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima have been featured in the Associated Press article “Japanese Disaster Films Highlight Victim’s Stories” (February 27, 2013). Links to the article and several of the media outlets that published it can be found HERE.
“In the Grey Zone” to screen in Human Rights Film Festival
“In the Grey Zone”, Ian’s first documentary about the nuclear crises in Fukushima, will be screened in this weekend’s Nepal Human Rights International Film Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. Filmed just one month after the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, in April 2011, “In the Grey Zone” follows the story of the children living in the 20-30 kilometer radiation zone as they prepare to return to school.
Prior to World Premier, Ian’s film “A2” is taken to court
Documentary film director Ian Thomas Ash has been contacted by a lawyer who is representing a group of Fukushima children who have filed a law suit against the local government demanding their right to study in a safe environment. The lawyer has asked Ian for the full version of his documentary “A2”, which is still in post-production, and an official statement about Ian’s findings to be used as evidence in the case. Ian explains what is happening on his blog HERE.
“A2” private screening held for participants
On February 12, Ian traveled to Fukushima to show the mothers who appear in his documentary “A2” the rough cut of the film. Ian wrote about the mothers’ reaction to the film on his DocumentingIan blog. Ian is currently in post-production for “A2“, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. European Premier of “In the Grey Zone” held in Rotterdam
The World Premier of “In the Grey Zone” was held today (October 6) at the 2012 Camera Japan Festival in Rotterdam, Holland. Japan Camera, held annually in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, is “a Japanese cultural festival with its main focus on film that also dives into other areas like art, music, dance, fashion, architecture, food and many more” (Camera Japan website). Due to extenuating circumstances, Ian was unable to attend the screening in Rotterdam, but he joined the post-screening Q and A via Skype from his Tokyo studio. “In the Grey Zone” featured prominently in Orlando press
The Orlando Sentinel, in its continuing coverage of the Global Peace Film Festival, has included Ian’s documentary “In the Grey Zone” in a September 13, 2012 article that lists the “10 (films) that caught my eye and show the range of topics featured at the fest”. Additionally, in the print edition of the two-page article ‘Peace x 10’, also published September 13, 2012, the still photograph (by Katsuyoshi Ueno) and the description of “In the Grey Zone” were prominently featured (Page 4 grab above, Page 3 grab below, web version here).
Ian awarded at Rhode Island International Film Festival
The 2012 Rhode Island International Film Festival ended today with an awards ceremony at the historic Vets theatre in Providence. During the ceremony, Ian was awarded with the “2012 Filmmaker of the Future” award. A complete list of awards can be found on the RIIFF website. ***** UPDATED October 5, 2012 ***** The list of Audience Choice Awards has just been published, and in addition to the “2012 Filmmaker of the Future” award, Ian’s film “In the Grey Zone” (published under the Japanese title “Gurei Zoun No Naka”) was awarded the First Prize for Best Documentary.
