“In the Grey Zone”, Ian’s first documentary about the nuclear crises in Fukushima, will be screened in this weekend’s Nepal Human Rights International Film Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. Filmed just one month after the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, in April 2011, “In the Grey Zone” follows the story of the children living in the 20-30 kilometer radiation zone as they prepare to return to school.

Documentary film director Ian Thomas Ash has been contacted by a lawyer who is representing a group of Fukushima children who have filed a law suit against the local government demanding their right to study in a safe environment.  The lawyer has asked Ian for the full version of his documentary “A2”, which is still in post-production, and an official statement about Ian’s findings to be used as evidence in the case. On February 12, Ian traveled to Fukushima to show the mothers who appear in his documentary “A2” the rough cut of the film.  Ian wrote about the mothers’ reaction to the film on his DocumentingIan blog. Ian is currently in post-production for “A2“, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of March.  More information about the film and a link to the trailer can be found on the film’s website.

Since returning from another trip to film in Fukushima in January, Ian has been in post-production for his second film about the nuclear disaster.  The new film, “A2“, documents the increasing number of children in Fukushima found to have thyroid cysts and nodules.  “A2” follows Ian’s 2012 documentary “In the Grey Zone“, the central theme of which was the future health of the children living in Fukushima just weeks after the nuclear meltdown. Ian’s feature documentary “Gurei Zoun No Naka” (In the Grey Zone), premiered last summer at the 2012 Rhode Island International Film Festival.  On the final day of the festival, Ian was awarded with the “Filmmaker of the Future Award“.  After the festival was over, the votes were tallied and the audience choice awards were announced in the autumn.  “In the Grey Zone” was given the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary, and Ian received the certificate in the post this week. Fukushima mothers continue to share their struggle with Ian

Ian’s monthly visits to Fukushima continue, and he has just come back from another filming trip. Prior to his arrival, more Fukushima mothers had contacted Ian about the results of their children’s thyroid screenings and blood tests.  Ian met with many families to discuss the issue of thyroid cysts and nodules, the government’s plans to use locally-grown rice in the children’s mandatory school lunch program, and the increasing evidence that the decontamination program is ineffective and exposing the children to extremely high levels of radiation.
